Yesterday, Ralph Nader asked the US Supreme Court to hear his Texas ballot access case. His Pennsylvania ballot access and Oregon ballot access case are already pending before that court. The issues in Texas are whether it is constitutional for a state to require more signatures, and an earlier deadline, for independent presidential candidates than for new parties.

Ballot Access laws are nothing more than barriers created by the two party system designed to stiffle dissent and prevent newparties from emmerging in U.S. politics. It is important to remember that independent candidates and third parties play a vital role in the American political arena. They provide altertnative voices and choices for millions of American people whom the major parties neglect or just plain don’t provide proper representation for. The third parties also bring up issues that the two major parties just refuse to talk about. Tens of millions of U.S. citizens are being left without proper attention, leadership, inspiration, or representation. In the words of Ralph Nader himself “There has to be more voices and choices out there.The two party system has to be broken up.”
