Burlington, Vermont Voters Pass IRV

March 2nd, 2005

On March 1, the voters of Burlington, Vermont passed Instant-Runoff Voting for future mayoral elections in that city, by 62% to 38%. The legislature must approve this charter amendment, but it is very likely that it will do so. Burlington has partisan mayoral elections.

It will be interesting to see if this is taken up across Vermont.

Does New Hampshire have any use of IRV? Hope they may.

    Thomas-
As far as I know, the only jurisdiction in the United States actually using IRV is San Francisco. Utah republicans used to use it in their caucuses, but I think they stopped last year. Other municipalities have adopted it PENDING having the right voting machines or for special elections only. I haven’t heard of IRV being adopted in any jurisdiction in NH.
