On August 2, the state chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party said that the Democrats will challenge the Green statewide petition. This is only the second time in the last 60 years that any minor party or statewide petition has been challenged in Pennsylvania; the first time was in 2004, when Democrats challenged Nader’s independent petition.

The Green/Republican alliance are not successful in their deliberate attempt to squeeze Bob Casey’s vote by putting a Green on the ballot.
As much as alternative choices are good, I can’t imagine Pennsylvanians happily revelling in the choice between Democratic, Republican and Republican-Backed Green.
If you believe that the Greens are just looking for “ballot access” you’ll believe anything.
It does not follow logically that just because the Green Party is on the ballot in Pennsylvania, that will injure the Democratic Party. Pennsylvania is a state in which the League of Women Voters invites everyone who is on the November ballot into its debates for US Senator and Governor. For all anyone knows, if the Greens are on in the US Senate debate, the Green candidate will attack Senator Santorum and not attack Democratic candidate Casey. Remember the 1992 presidential debates, when Ross Perot criticized president George H. W. Bush mercilessly in all three debates, and had nothing hostile to say about Bill Clinton. Similarly in 1936, the Communist Party sincerely wanted Franklin D. Roosevelt to be re-elected, but they still ran a candidate, Earl Browder. Browder used the attention he got to attack Alf Landon and say good things about Roosevelt. It is thoughtless to say that just because the Greens are on the ballot in Pennsylvania in 2006, that will hurt the Democrats. Samuel Lubell documented that Henry Wallace actually helped Truman get re-elected in 1948.
If it’s so obvious that Greens hurt Democrats just by being on the ballot, why aren’t Democrats and DailyKos attacking the Greens for running other US Senate candidates around the nation this year? And why did the Democratic candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2002, Ed Rendell, cheerfully sign a petition to get the Green Party on the ballot against him?
it’s just a shame that sheople believe so much in the “two-party system” that “3rd parties” are always considered spoilers. The R’s & D’s just want to maintain control, they don’t care about what is constitutional, or best for the State or Country.
