IRV Supporters Cheer Calif. Secretary of State Outcome; Disappointed in Colorado

At least two races for Secretary of State involved a contest between a major party nominee who supports alternative voting systems, versus one who doesn’t. In California, Democrat Debra Bowen ousted Republican Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, which is gain for supporters of alternative voting systems. But in Colorado, Republican Mike Coffman defeated Democrat Ken Gordon for the open Secretary of State position.

    For what it’s worth, in Minnesota, Mark Ritchie (DFL) was elected Secretary of state, replacing Mary Kiffmeyer (R). Per their stances on the issues, as published on their respective campaign websites, Ritchie supports the trial of IRV in Minneapolis and vows to remove barriers to the implementation of IRV, while Kiffmeyer tellingly made no mention of the topic.
