Illinois Daily Newspaper Endorses Green for Governor

On October 31, the Rockford Register Star endorsed Richard Whitney for Illinois Governor. It said “A new party has the best chance to bring honest government to Illinois”, and also agreed with Whitney’s stance on school finance, job creation and the environment. Rockford is the home town of former Congressman John B. Anderson, who polled 7% for president in the U.S. in 1980, and polled 21.5% in Winnebago County (the county that contains Rockford).

Illinois Daily Newspaper Endorses Green for Governor — 3 Comments

  1. San Diego alternative weekly City Beat is sooooooooooo pro Democratic Party that it came out AGAINST the Gray Davis recall in 2003! Some how that either ‘got religion’ or stumbled across the fact that Non GOP and Non Dems do exist! Fourteen minutes ago it came out for Green legend Peter [Nader VP] Camejo for Governor.

  2. oops :

“Quick show of hands: How many of you think Phil Angelides should be governor? OK, let’s see now—about 34 percent of you, we figure. You folks look like the Democratic base—we can tell by the Kerry/Edwards remnants on your bumpers. Guess what: Your leaders in Sacramento don’t agree with you. If they did, this might have been a more interesting campaign. What’s wrong with this picture? For heaven’s sake, this is still a blue state, right?

The truth is that the Dems in Sactown are fine with Arnold Schwarzenegger—partly because Angelides has inspired no one outside of his own household. He’s run one of the lamest campaigns ever, choosing to focus on Schwarzenegger’s support of George W. Bush in 2004 when voters would rather hear his vision for California. We believe he has one, but he’s failed to get the media interested in helping him articulate it. We agree with Angelides on the key issues—the budget, health care and education. We’d be happy as pumpkin pie to see him win.

But he won’t. Schwarzenegger has an 18-point lead in the latest poll. Yeah, the same dude who Californians only a year ago wanted to stuff into a boxcar bound for anywhere but here. We’re a forgiving lot, aren’t we? He’s going to win because the mainstream establishment believes he’s learned his lesson—that’s it’s not nice to call powerful politicians “girlie men” and it’s politically suicidal to demonize teachers, nurses, cops and firefighters. He’s certainly learned what unions can do if you piss them off.

We don’t know what to make of the guy. He seems to be whatever he thinks voters want him to be—first a government reformer and a car-tax reducer, then a rabid union-buster, then a bipartisan cooperator—and with no higher office to run for after Nov. 7, he’s a blank slate. No one, maybe not even him, knows what’s next. As for his record, beyond reforming workers’ comp and signing a Democratic global-warming bill, he hasn’t accomplished much of anything. He hasn’t done a thing to fix the state’s structural deficit. He rejects raising taxes to increase revenue while supporting massive borrowing, which is politically easy but is tantamount to imposing a tax on the future.

But as far as Republicans go, this one isn’t half bad. He doesn’t go around scapegoating immigrants, and he’s socially libertarian. All in all, if he stays the present course, we’re cool. Moreover, having a chief executive from one party and a legislature controlled by another isn’t a bad thing.

But we’re not endorsing Schwarzenegger. We’re endorsing Green Party candidate Peter Camejo. No. 1, he’s smarter than almost all of us. We especially like him on economic matters and immigration. He told the Sacramento News & Review that “we do not have an immigration problem in the United States. That’s a total, completely fabricated myth. These people create jobs for American citizens because they strengthen the economy.”

But the real reason you should vote for him is that by doing so, you’re making a statement in favor of opening up government to people who don’t label themselves Democrat or Republican. Please vote for Peter Camejo.”

  3. On top of San Diego County’s premier alternative weekly, a three year old, Pro Democratic Party, Howard Dean orientated, progressive tabloid, dropping official Democratic stardard bearer Philip Angelides for 2004 Nader Presidential ticket mate Peter Camejo other media are paving the way for the ultimate demise of the Democans and the Republicrats.
