Minor Party 2008 Presidential Conventions

The Green Party is holding a national meeting July 12-15 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Attendees in Reading will hear presentations on whether the 2008 national presidential convention should be in Minneapolis, Chicago or Detroit. A decision won’t be made until August 15, 2007. Several Green Party members who hold elective office in Minneapolis will be making the pitch for Minneapolis at the Reading meeting.

The Constitution Party will probably hold its national convention during the last week of April 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Libertarian Party had already previously chosen Denver, the last weekend of May 2008.

The major party conventions will be in Minneapolis (Republican) and Denver (Democratic).

  1. Being that “probably” is the key word, is there any idea when the Constitution Party will decide between Kansas City and Phoenix?

  2. I would think since the Republicans are having their convention in Minneapolis that it would overshadow the Green Party. My guess would be that the Green Party would be more likely to get press coverage in the host city if they were the only party hosting a convention there that year. So Chicago or Detroit might be a better place for them to go

The Libertarian Party is going to have that problem in my opinion. The local media in Denver will not be as interested in covering their convention since the Democrats will be coming to town for their convention

  3. I don’t think the Libertarian Party is disadvantaged by being in the same city as the Democrats. The media will have “National convention fever” anyway, so it will be natural for them to be interested in the Libertarian national convention which is two and one-half months before the Democratic convention.

  4. Oakland/Berkeley also put in a bid for the Green convention; and the Republican convention is actually going to be in St. Paul, not Minneapolis, as I understand it.
