New Mexico Secretary of State Threatens Green Party

Early this year, the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office said in writing that the Green Party is still a ballot-qualified party. However, since then, the Director of the Bureau of Elections has resigned, and the new Director does not believe that the Green Party is ballot-qualified. The new Director did say orally that if the Green Party showed him the letter from the past Director, saying the party is qualified, he would honor it. However, now he is equivocating. The Green Party will be consulting an attorney.

  1. I call on every person reading my comment to write to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office and demand to honor the Green Party’s ballot access. Please tell him his unethical , undemocratic tactics , and illegal tactics is not going to go unnoticed this time and will not win the Democratic party any more votes if The Green Party is not on the ballot. On the contrary, we will make sure the Democrats get theirs. Enough with the Hipocrisy and dirty play of the Democrats.

  2. Tne New Mexico Secretary of State’s web site has for years avoided mentioning which are the qualified parties. For example, in the voter registration section, it only lists the number of registered voters in the Democratic and Republican Parties, even though they keep data for other parties. One sign that the Green Party is a qualified party are the state income tax forms, however, which list the qualified parties so that taxpayers may donate $1 to the party of choice.

  3. I second Jonathan’s recommendation- we need a strong reaction to this administration’s continued discrimination toward third parties and it’s seeming vendetta against the Green Party.
My next Bernalillo Co. newsletter will definitely urge swift commentary to the SoS and the press.

And as Richard points out- there is a provision on the state income tax that allows us to donate $1 to the Green party, which I have done for years AND we were still listed on the last form. I also had to re-register due to a change of address and my card still says GRN.
