Pennsylvania Legislator Interested in Replacing Petitions with Filing Fees
November 30th, 2007Pennsylvania Representative Kerry Benninghoff has been seriously considering introducing a bill to let candidates get on ballots by paying a filing fee, instead of submitting a mandatory petition. The Pennsylvania legislature is still in session and will keep working during the first part of December 2007. Benninghoff is a Republican from Bellefonte and has served in the House since 1996.

Louisiana has for years given all candidates the option of qualifying either by petition or by paying a fee. The amount of the fee– like the number of petition signatures– varies from office to office.

Florida is another state that has abolished mandatory ballot access petitions (except for independent presidential candidates) in favor of fees, for both primary and general election ballot access.

Here’s an idea, let the “Minor Parties” & Independents use the same set of filing requirements as the Republicratic Duopoly.

Louisiana does. ALL candidates there may qualify either by petition or by paying a fee. According to comment #3 above, Florida does too.
