Vermont Instant Runoff-Voting Bill Passes Legislature
March 21st, 2008On March 21, the Vermont legislature gave final approval to SB 108, a bill that was introduced in 2007. It establishes Instant-Runoff Voting for general election congressional elections. If the Governor signs it, Vermont will be the first state to have used Instant-Runoff Voting for any statewide general elections.

Only if the result is unusual, I think. If someone wins on round one anyway it won’t even get a footnote.

I would like to see some sort of “equal preference” IRV in the future. IRV is an important move but I think the impact in American elections would be bigger if we allowed for this improvement.

If they make the elections non-partisan, that would just be icing on the cake.

I wonder if it has enough votes to make it veto-proof, in case the Governor does that?
