Vermont Governor Vetoes Instant-Runoff Bill

On April 4, Vermont Governor James Douglas, a Republican, vetoed SB 108, which would have provided that Vermont use Instant-Runoff voting in congressional general elections. Thanks to Rob Richie for the news.

    The Democrats have a veto-proof majority in the state Senate, and if you add the Democrats, the Progressives, and the Independents in the House, there’s another veto-proof majority. I don’t want to hear any excuses about the votes not being there.

    I agree, they better override that veto.

    I think Douglas won his first term based partially on vote splitting. It would make sense that he’d veto the bill.

    Maybe so, but the original vote was not enough to override in at least one house (I forget which one). Apparently, not all Democrats are on board.
