I hope the First District doesn't turn out like the Gulf Coast district, which is more heavily Republican.

Sen. Trent Lott meddled in the 1989 special election in his home district. The Democrat Gene Taylor was elected, and he's been in Congress ever since. In fact, he's now the senior member of our House delegation.

That's the seat to which the Republican Roger Wicker was first elected in 1994, and he didn't have very strong opposition in 2006.

Childers campaigned as a conservative Democrat. He was endorsed by Jack Reed, the 1987 Republican nominee for governor.
