May 30th, 2008

Here is an account of a debate held May 28 between Washington’s Secretary of State, and the chair of the Whatcom County Democratic Party, over the “top-two” election system that will be tried for the first time in Washington state this year. Thanks to Steve Rankin.

  1. Demo Rep Says:

NO need for ANY primaries. Save some taxpayer cash.

General election ballot access by EQUAL nominating petitions.

    P.R. for legislative body elections.

    A.V. for NONPARTISAN executive/judicial elections.

Difficult only for EVIL STUPID party hacks with Stone Age brains — i.e. the typical party hack politician since 4 July 1776.

  2. Jim R Says:

LD 40 appears to be around 65%D when the GOP bothers to run a candidate.

If there are 5 Democratics running for the LD 40 Senate seat, that means the incumbent is retiring or is term-limited. But the primary might see fewer voters, so under the old pick a party primary, the Democratics’ nominee might have the support of perhaps 10% of the vote, and with no runoff, and then would be elected again and again because of the D after the name.

I suspect that the Democratics county chairwoman may be realizing that she is not indispensible.

  3. Jason Says:

What an asinine system- a step in the wrong direction.

  4. Jim R Says:

Several candidates have said they prefer the “Democrat Party” while others say they prefer the “Democratic Party” there is one House contest where so far no one has filed with a preference for any other party, so there could be a battle between the Democrats and Democratics this fall.
