New York City Council Extends Term Limits

October 23rd, 2008

On October 23, the New York city council voted 29-22 to change the term limits law for elected city officials. The voters had twice passed a law setting a two-term limit, but the new law permits three terms. If the law had not been changed, Mayor Bloomberg and two-thirds of the members of the City Council could not have run for re-election in 2009.

Yes, probably very bad news for NYC. With any luck, people’s increasing anger and disillusionment will latch on to this, and throw Bloomberg out.

If I were an NYC voter, I’d vote out any of the candidates that seek to extend their reign into a third term. I’m generally for term limits, but in a city with the politics of NYC, I think it’s a good means of keeping the cronyism at bay, at least to some extent.
