Pelosi Opponents Disrupt Public TV/Radio Station

On November 1, KQED Radio (San Francisco) broadcast a 30-minute interview with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi has steadfastly refused to debate any of her three opponents. Her three opponents are independent Cindy Sheehan, Libertarian Phil Berg, and Republican Dana Walsh. They have debated each other several times, but Pelosi has never been willing to be included.

Supporters of some of Pelosi’s opponents protested inside the offices of KQED while Pelosi was being interviewed, since the station is not offering 30-minute interviews with any of them, as individual candidates. After at least ten minutes of argument with station representatives, the station finally relented and allowed Sheehan (who was present at the protest) to phone in a question to Pelosi, who answered it on-air. Thanks to IndependentPoliticalReport, one can watch 13 minutes of this interesting exchange. Sheehan’s question was about impeachment.

  1. More proof that Democans act like Republicrats and that Republicrats act like Democans —–when the mood suits them.

How can PBS tolerate such ethical misbehavior? Oh, yeah, Non Commercial television, with the end less commercials. Couldn’t TNB or BBC be talked into taking over the mush heads from CPB for free.

No more pledge drives, no more pledge drives….

“ “When you give one candidate’s voice and not the other, it can really create some problems in terms of elevating the perspective of one,” said Dhavan V. Shah, a University of Wisconsin professor who specializes in political communication. ”

Well KQED forum provides Nancy Peloci a half hour just before the election and then squeezes her three opponents into a half hour of air time Giving Nancy’s voice three times the coverage of any of her opponents. If this is equal access to the Public Airwaves under KQED then KQED should not receive any public funding.

The Soviet Union had a news paper by the name of Pravda that had unfair access to the Russian public in terms of being subsidized by the government. Pravda functioned as a mouth piece for the Bolshevik Party. Your actions in providing unequal access via your station to the dominant political party and specifically to Nancy Peloci makes your behavior the equivalent of being a mouth piece of the government and specifically makes you effectively a publication of the Democratic Party.

The day isn’t over you have time. You have Sunday you have Monday. Give Nancy Peloci’s opponents equal access. You gave her a half hour of free broadcast time. I am calling on you to give her opponents an equal amount of time during a similar time slot before the Tuesday Election.

I am going to encourage other sf bay area listeners to join me in calling for the FCC to strip you of your license to broadcast using the public airways, to join me in calling for a boycott of your fund-raising drives and to protest in what ever ways possible against your very slanted bias of election coverage!

If you are going to interview one candidate you should interview all the candidates for an equal amount of time during similar time slots!

If I thought you were an un-biased organization focused on providing information to the public then i would expect you to be embarrassed over this episode and work to correct it. At this moment I don’t think you are focused on anything other then supporting your candidate for Congress Nancy Peloci.

  3. The Republican candidate is a neoconservative fascist that wants to invade Iran. Sheehan is a socialist and is a friend of Hugo Chavez. Vote for the Libertarian Party nominee.

  4. Cindy needs to go away. This protest campaign is nothing more than a distraction by a small group of immature people whining. While our democracy requires a vocal minority, this campaign is not a rational or intelligently run protest campaign that could have raised issues that need to be addressed. It’s simply another ultra left vanity, ego-over-substance driven episode of acting out.

  5. Mission Res,

Welcome to America a place where tolerate dissent! Welcome to San Francisco a place where if you aren’t different you are strange.

As long as we have troops getting killed in Iraq I hope Cindy keeps protesting. As the father of a fifteen year old boy I might just be a bit biased on this subject. You see, I would rather he not be used as cannon fodder.

  6. Wow, Mission Res-you’re as baffled as Pelosi. Our democracy requires strong voices-like Sheehan’s. Cindy spends more time bringing the issues to light than the Democrats. The problem is that too many republicans and democrats are uninformed and unwilling to serve their country in any way-other than by slander and maliciousness.

GO CINDY SHEEHAN. PUT THE CRIMINALS OUT!!!!!!

  7. What kind of democracy do we live in when no one is allowed to debate the incumbent? Nancy Pelosi hasn’t held a public forum since January 2006. She runs away from any real questions, because then she’d have to answer for why she continues to put war funding on the table and impeachment off the table, in direct opposition to what her constituents want.

Pelosi doesn’t represent San Franciscan values or democratic values in general — only the party’s “political elite.” She voted for the FISA bill (gutting the 4th ammendment) and was instrumental in the outrageous $850,000,000,000 taxpayer bailout of privately owned banks.
