Guess what might have happened if the 1860 slave States of MD and VA had ANY control over the D.C. area ??? As it was MD was de facto taken over by the Union Army with 4 years of mass murder to end the rebellion and slavery in the slave States -- about 620,000 dead Americans on both sides - with multi-thousands more mentally and physically maimed for life. #3 D.C. exists so that the party hacks in any State legislature do NOT mess with the Federal regime.
