Minnesota Bills for Local Instant Runoff Voting

Bills have been introduced in both houses of the Minnesota legislature to establish guidelines for use of Instant Runoff Voting by cities and other governmental units that may wish to use IRV to elect their own officers. They are SF 1820 and HF 2052.

  1. Their is also some informal ‘discussions’ with some of the minor parties about working together on the time window allowed to circulate a nominating petition.

  2. Minnesota’s petitioning window of only 2 weeks is easily the smallest petitioning window in the nation, for regularly-scheduled elections. The next smallest window is New York’s 6 weeks.
