Bill to Expand U.S. House by Two Seats is Dead for This Year

On June 9, attempts to pass bills in Congress to expand the size of the U.S. House were abandoned. D.C. Delegate to the House Eleanor Holmes Norton removed HR 157 for consideration by the House this year. See this story in the Washington Examiner.

  1. Well, giving it back to Maryland might be tricky. Has anyone actually researched what would be involved and the political issues it would raise?

    I doubt the Congress wants to have to submit to the laws of an independent State. Right now D.C. city laws have to be approved by Uncle Sam.

    How would DC and Maryland voters likely respond to the union?

  2. Even simpler would be to declare that DC residents are Maryland citizens, and that the 14th Amendment was never intended to deprive persons of their State citizenship. You wouldn’t have to do anything about DC.
