As put in a news interview by one young lady in the McCarthy camp, "It was like going downstairs on Christmas morning and finding that all of the presents had been stolen." In any event, the McCarthy, and McGovern (representing the Kennedy people and others), forces were railroaded at the Democratic convention anyway. What a bummer that was. The polls at the time consistently showed that had Eugene McCarthy obtained the Democratic nomination, he would have been elected President of the United States. As a young Republican at the time, I knew that I would have voted for him, rather than Richard Nixon, in November.
