Seattle Weekly Story on How Vermont and Maine Cope with Letting Felons Vote

Seattle Weekly of January 7 has this interesting story on Maine and Vermont, the two states that currently permit incarcerated felons to vote. As noted earlier, on January 5 the 9th circuit had ruled that Washington must let felons vote. Secretary of State Sam Reed said in response that he would seek an immediate stay of the ruling, as the state prepares to ask for U.S. Supreme Court review. Reed said there are logistical problems if felons are allowed to vote.

But Reed also said that he had not checked with elections officials in Maine and Vermont to see how those states handle felon voting. Seattle Weekly therefore did its own story on the process in those two states.

  1. Different FELONY crime rates in States having / not having felons voting ???

i.e. having felons vote suddenly makes them good citizens NOT committing more felonies — murder, robbery, home invasions, etc. ???

  2. Prison inmates have been able to vote in Puerto Rico since 1980. They vote on the Sunday before the election. The electoral commission brings all the materials to each prison and the voting is conducted like in an ordinary polling place.

  3. I don’t understand how committing any crime takes away your constitutional rights – aren’t these “inalienable”?

  4. # 3 Governments are formed to protect folks from EVIL criminals, domestic and foreign, private and public.

One loses *rights* for being a legally convicted FELON — a murderer, a robber, a home invader, etc.

See the second paragraph of the DOI.

  5. The DOI is not a legal document, nor set of laws. The second paragraph of the DOI says nothing abt felons voting or not.

There is not social positive, nor political positive, from persons currently in prison not being allowed to vote. Let alone persons who have served their time, they should be able to vote as a matter of course.

  6. How many folks on this list have had felonies committed against them or their relatives or their friends or their neighbors by some reptile brain FELON(S) ???

Crime and PUNISHMENT — for a while or a lifetime.

What is the suicidal DNA stuff in the *liberal* brain ???
