Socialist Party on Ballot in Vermont for First Time Since 1952

The Socialist Party has petitioned onto the Vermont ballot this year.  It is the first time since 1952 that the Socialist Party has appeared on the Vermont ballot.  The seven statewide nominees each needed 500 signatures, and they gathered them successfully.

This year’s Socialist Party nominees in Vermont are also the nominees of the Liberty Union Party.  They will appear on the November ballot with their names, followed by “Liberty Union/Socialist.”  The voters will not be able to choose which party label to support.

Various Socialist Party presidential nominees have appeared on the Vermont ballot in recent years, but in each case it is because the Liberty Union Party, a ballot-qualified party since the 1970’s, nominated them.  These past Socialist Party presidential nominees in Vermont only had the ballot label “Liberty Union.”

Although many people commonly refer to Vermont’s U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders as a socialist, his ballot label, in all the years in which he was elected, has been “independent.”

  1. Slight corrections/additions:

Leslie Mamolare, the Liberty Union nominee for Secretary of State, is running solely as a Liberty Union nominee and will not also be running on the Socialist ballot line. Also, Boots Wardinski, the Liberty Union and Socialist nominee for Lieutenant Governor, is also running in the Progressive primary. I think that makes it the only contested Progressive primary in Vermont this year.

  2. Thank you, although I think my original post is correct. I had been aware that the Socialist Party didn’t cross-endorse every single Liberty Union Party nominee. Why didn’t the Socialist Party cross-endorse Leslie Marmorala for Auditor?

  3. Mm, indeed, it seems you are right. There are eight statewide offices in Vermont this year (Senate, House, and the six executive offices), and seven of the eight are dual LUP/SP-USA candidates.

As to why Leslie Marmolare isn’t dually endorsed, I think it might be that the other seven candidates are members of the Socialist Party, and Leslie isn’t. I know Peter Diamondstone, Jane Newton, Jerry Levy, and V. Murray Ngoima are all SP members, as they’ve all attended conventions in the past, but can’t say for the other LUP candidates.

  4. Are not ALL the New Age Donkeys in VT (and in all other States) de facto socialists / communists ???

    What’s in a name ???
