On March 8, San Gabriel, California, held a city council election. John Harrington, a registered Libertarian for the past 17 years, was elected. Two seats were up, and four candidates ran. Harrington received more votes than any other person running for city council. San Gabriel is in eastern Los Angeles County and has approximately 40,000 residents. All city elections in California are non-partisan.

  1. Here’s another example, 3rd partisans, of how such parties can break into the system. Just because John Harrington’s name was not listed by the “Libertarial Party” label on the ballot, does not mean he is not a Libertarian. And while on the City Council he will have many opportunities to speak as a Libertarian. When will we ever learn?

  2. Wow! Now this is really, really cool. This is a solid victory. One the Libertarian Party should be very proud of.

Congratulations all around: LPC, Ken Tanaga, Hinkle, National LP leadership, and most certainly John Harrington.

  3. I can’t find evidence of a Libertarian Party program for San Gabriel, CA (or any website at all for Mr. Harrington). If none exists, it makes no difference if he purports to be a Libertarian or a Unitarian or a Vegetarian.

US major party platforms-which used to provoke vicious intraparty fights-have now been reduced to ludicrous products of empty ritual, but for someone trying to present an alternative to the status quo the presentation of a non-mendacious political program is a necessity.

  4. He has already taken his campaign web page down, because the election was over a month ago.
