Progressive Party Nominates Candidate in Oregon Special Election for U.S. House

The Progressive Party, which is ballot-qualified in Oregon, has nominated Steven Reynolds to run for U.S. House, First District, in the special election being held early next year. See this story. The Libertarian Party had already nominated someone for this seat as well. The Independent Party is in the process of holding a mail ballot primary to decide whether to cross-endorse another candidate or run its own nominee.

The Oregon Progressive Party has never before nominated its own member for a U.S. House race, although in 2010 it cross-endorsed three Green Party U.S. House nominees. The party was formed in 2008 to serve as a ballot access vehicle for Ralph Nader’s independent run. When it was first formed, it was called the Peace Party, but then it changed its name to the Progressive Party.

  1. Have the Progressives run any other candidates for other office since Nader’s 2008 run except the cross endorsed candidates?

  2. How about Progressive Peace Party — P3 and/or 3P ???

One for all – all for one — see the 3 Musketeers books/movies.

  3. #1, yes, they had two statewide candidates in 2010, for US Senate and Treasurer. The US Senate candidate got 1.00% and the Treasurer candidate, Walt Brown, former Socialist Party presidential candidate, got 2.81%.

  4. In 2008 the Peace Party of Oregon ran one candidate — Ralph Nader for President. The party was officially recognized by the Oregon Secretary of State only a few days before the deadline for nominations, as it took the party all summer to collect sufficient signatures for formation.

In 2009, the Peace Party changed its name to the Progressive Party.

In 2010, the Oregon Progressive Party nominated its own candidates for these races: Rick Staggenborg for U.S. Senate and Walt Brown for State Treasurer (as Richard noted above). It also cross-nomiated 3 Greens for the U.S. House and also Peter Defazio (D, 4th District of Oregon).
