Donald Trump Changes His Party Affiliation from “Republican” to “Independent”

On December 22, Donald Trump changed his party registration from “Republican” to “independent.” In previous decades he had at various times been a Republican, and other times a Democrat, but this is the first time he has ever been registered outside both major parties. Thanks to Rick Hasen for the news. UPDATE: Trump also registered into the Independence Party in 1999 for a while. Thanks to the commenter below for this correction.

  1. Please tell me he accidentally registered under the Independence Party- it would be so typical. Of course IP leader MacKay would do backflips.

  2. Republican or “independent”, that won’t satisfy the animal rights activists as long as he keeps wearing those things on the top of his head.

At least Biden’s are permanently anchored.

  3. How many AIRHEAD candidates can there be in any Prez election year ???

DIVIDE and CONQUER — been working for 6,000 plus years.

    See Hitler in the 1930s.
Doomed when he got powermad and had a 2 front war on 22 June 1941.

  4. #5-
Actually assuming he checked the “I do to wish to enroll in a Party” box and not the Independence Party then he can’t vote in any primary.

  5. “but this is the first time he has ever been registered outside both major parties”

Actually he was a registered Reform Party member from 1999-2000.

  6. #7, no one has ever been a registered member of the Reform Party in New York state. No one could register in New York state into an unqualified party until the Green Party won its New York lawsuit on that subject in 2003. The Reform Party was never ballot-qualified in New York.

Maybe you are thinking of the New York Independence Party, but Trump was never a member of that party. Maybe you were thinking of Mayor Bloomberg?? Although he was never a member of it either.

  8. #6 – We won in Federal Court to allow registered independents or “No Party” to vote in Independence Party primaries.

  9. So in NY there are 434,752 registered in the Independence Party but 2,326,786 Blanks are also able to vote when there are primaries.

  10. #14- Wow. I have been in Alabama the last few years but just moved back. When did that happen? And out of curiosity on what grounds?

  12. Mr. Trump’s latest affiliation change does not take effect until after the 2012 November general election is over, so Mr. Trump’s move “preserves” nothing, really. This means Mr. Trump is still a registered Republican and still has the opportunity to vote in New York’s presidential primary.

According to New York State’s Board of Election website:

“If you wish to change your enrollment from one party to another or from not-enrolled to a party, send a Voter Registration Form with your new choice to your county board of elections. The board will notify you when the change takes place, by Law, after the next general election.”

Trump could run as an independent, even if he was still a registered Republican. He would just need that party’s permission and meet that state’s particular requirements from whatever line he chooses to run on.

For example, if he wanted to run on the Independence Party line in New York state, he would need a Wilson-Pekula (a New York legal term granting permission to run on a party’s line that you are not a member of) from that party.
