Michigan Statewide Referendum Removed from Statewide Ballot Because Font on Petition was Allegedly Wrong Size

On April 26, the Michigan State Board of Canvassers invalidated a statewide referendum petition on the grounds that the title of the measure on the petitions used the wrong font size. The law says it should be in 14 point font. See this story, which says that supporters of the referendum had 140 people in the audience at the Board’s meeting, and these supporters reacted angrily when the decision was made. The Board tied 2-2; a tie keeps the measure off the ballot. Supporters of the referendum had gathered 203,238 signatures. Thanks to Thomas Jones for the link.

It is certain that supporters will challenge the decision in court.

  1. One more *substantial compliance with the law* case for the courts to mess with.

Does the U.S.A. Const. have the politically correct font size ???

Oops. – the original (now in the National Archives) was hand written — should be perhaps in front of SCOTUS every day.

  2. If I understand this correctly, in Michigan if 203,000 people want a measure on the ballot but 2 do not, then the measure is off the ballot. Of course, I realize that these two were not voting based on their personal predilections but on the size of the font. Thank goodness they take their responsibilities seriously.

I can visualize them now with their magnifying glasses measuring the font point by point. What inspiring dedication. I’m sure that had the point size been proper they would have devoted the same intense scrutiny to ensure that the pages were the right size and not shaved by a thousandth of an inch.

I trust they will bring a similar level of professionalism to future reviews, one of which might be of a referendum to abolish the Michigan State Board of Canvassers.

  3. # 2 The gerrymander OLIGARCHIES in each State are now ALL about the same — ALL ANTI-Democracy ALL the time.

The moron so-called mainstream media is full of zombies about gerrymander math that keeps such EVIL oligarchies in power.

    P.R. and nonpartisan App.V.

  4. Kinda off topic but when will the Natural Law Party in Michigan decide who will get their ballot line for the Presidential Election this year? Any candidates actively seeking that spot?

  5. #5, chances are that the Justice Party will seek the Natural Law Party nomination for president in Michigan.
