Mitt Romney Says a Presidential Candidate Needs 50% of the Vote to be Elected President

According to this news story, Mitt Romney recently said he needs 50.1% of the vote to be elected President. In the context, it seems obvious he meant the popular vote.

Of course, this is not true. Presidents who have been elected with less than 50% of the popular vote include John Quincy Adams, James Polk, Zachery Taylor, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Grover Cleveland (twice), Benjamin Harrison, Woodrow Wilson (twice), Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton (twice), and George W. Bush.

  1. Rich,

You’re telling me Mitt Romney lied? You Can’t be serious.

Next you’ll tell me the Pope’s Catholic, The Sun rises in the east, and water is wet.

  2. If somehow MR is elected via the 12th Amdt (with its EVIL defects), then will MR have cue cards held by Elephant staffers having the Art. II Prez oath ??? (rashly guessing that MR can read cue cards)

ONE more AIRHEAD MORON Prez possible ???

Would MR even be able to understand war codes — or have to go back to pre-school education ???

    HEAVEN HELP the U.S.A.
    —–
P.R. and nonpartisan App.V. — the latter to reduce the chances for getting an AIRHEAD MORON Prez.

  3. He needs 270 electoral votes. I would suggest that people vote independent or for a third party this time. Both parties failed us. If you live in WV House of Delegates 5th District and want change then vote Raymond V Davis III on November 6th. Time to send new blood to Charleston. Mr. Davis is part of the 99% and needs your vote to get rid of stagnation in the House of Delegates. Vote for Davis and donate to help him win. http://davisforwvhouse.webs.com/

  4. Is this an assurance from Mitt that he won’t take office if he gets less than 50% of the vote . . . or maybe it’s a challenge that neither he nor Obama should take office if they both get under 50%? I think that would be a compromise some people would like.

  5. Mitt is confused. He meant to say that only 50.1% of a brain is required to run for office.

If that’s the case, we should demand a certificate of brain authentication…and NOT the short form, either.

  6. # 5 Perhaps MR has 0.0 percent so-called brain ???

    — i.e. is he is a Night of the Living Dead (a BAD horror movie circa 1960) zombie from outer space ???

Apologies to Lt. Cmdr. Data of Star Trek — who at least had some positronic networks in his head.

  7. How about this idea?

Winner-take-all by state would mean a candidate that gets 50% of the vote or more will get all that state’s electors. Should no candidate get an absolute majority in that state, these electors would be pooled with other unallocated electors and together be allocated proportionally.

  8. Thanks Hon Richard Winger [Libertarian] for continually promoting the perpetrators of the two-party system and for engaging in legal skirmishes with them, that they love BTW because their lawyers get paid over-time for the additional work.

If your energy and abilities were applied to working more with the 8th USA Parliament our team would probably be a lot further along in 2012.

We’re the only known national committee that uses the innovative ranked choice consensus voting system to find 100% agreement, where more and more alternatives can be considered (the more the better) while trying to achieve 100% consensus on the planks of the platform for the virtual national American parliament.

Try it, we welcome all voters. It’s free and there are no road blocks. We even welcome the leaders of the Ds and the Rs, and we’re ready and eager to help everyone learn how to create a big team in American politics with a very large center with coordinating left and right wings.

You can actually elect your name now or someone elses name to represent you, and since only about 533 names have received tics, the chances of your choice being elected to the 1000-member team are pretty good right now.

To elect your name or your item to our platform, click the link below and follow the directions. The “eballot” must be marked with consecutively ranked numbers beginning with the number one, and then emailed to the correct email address.

    Here’s the way to go to do this;
    http://usparliament.org/votehere.php

Don’t just complain about the situation in American politics, become a participating voter in a team that’s organizing now. And we’re doing all this while not using plurality elections or single winner districts, and we keep every (e)ballot cast as proof printed in a single stack for your own verification and validation purposes.

  9. # 7 The 1787 Electoral College was and is ANTI-Democracy = PRO-monarchy/oligarchy — as a result of the EVIL conspiracy between the small and slave States in the top secret Fed. Convention.

Half the ECV in about 30 States/DC = about 25 percent indirect ANTI-Democracy minority rule.

The media is too evil stupid to review the math each 4 years.

    —-
Uniform definition of Elector in ALL of the U.S.A.

P.R. and nonpartisan App.V. — chance of a *close* national election with perhaps 140,000,000 voters — about ZERO.

    i.e. 1 percent = 1,400,000 votes

  10. hmmm i guess the electoral college will not be overturned in the near future as republicans and democrats must prefer to concentrate on swing states rather than everywhere. you would think though that would open up the possibility of winning by simply upping the turn out in states favourable to them.

  11. Probably a big obstacle to abolishing the electoral college is that lots of people seem to keep forgetting that it exists.

  12. #10 The brain dead media LOVE *leaders* doing powerful things.

Result – worse and worse contempt for the minority rule gerrymander Congress and State legislatures.

More and more power to the Prez (due to mighty bare majority/plurality wins in about 6 marginal gerrmander ECV States).

Political history timebomb MADNESS — as if 1861-1865 after 1860 was not EVIL DEADLY enough.

P.R. and nonpartisan App.V. — before it is too late.

  13. That is really attention-grabbing, You’re an overly skilled blogger. I’ve joined your rss feed and look ahead to searching for more of your fantastic post. Additionally, I’ve shared your site in my social networks
