The New York Times has this interview with Gary Johnson, on the eve of the Libertarian Party’s national convention, which starts May 3.
I know James Ogle reads this blog, so I’m just going to ask here: James, are you going to be at the LP convention as a presidential candidate this week?
Hi Joshua, I’m in Nevada heading to the convention, and I am please to hear from you.
I am familiar with both Hon Gary Johnson [Libertarian] who is on our team, and his VP nominee choice and with Hon Judge Jim Gray [Libertarian] who asked for his name to be removed from our team. They are for a three-party system, and I am for pure proportional representation through ranked choice voting (RCV), the single transferable vote (STV), the Sainte-Lague parliament seat distribution under the Hagenbach-Bishoff method.
I will be promoting the progressive/libertarian unity ticket at the convention, along with all 20 of our best candidates for president and vice president of whom six are women.

It’s a great interview and I like that Johnson pitched his candidacy as a something Democrats rather than Republicans can latch onto – because realistically the libertarian candidate will take more Republican votes, so it’s best to sell yourself the other direction so as to not appear to be simply a thorn in the side of the Republican candidate (& to get an equal balance). It’s really unfair, but it seems like the media assumes you’re guilty as a spoiler until proven innocent. Part of Perot’s success may have come from the fact that he barely hurt Bush more than Clinton and Clinton would have won anyway.
I love what he says about Obama’s record on civil liberties – sadly no Republican will talk about such things ever, because really Gary Johnson is running against GW Bush’s fourth term.
