See this interesting post at Independent Political Report, which says that three of the ten sponsors for the Commission on Presidential Debates have withdrawn, due to protests that the Commission stifles free discourse by its restrictive invitation rules.

Letters to the editor of newspapers in the cities where these sponsors are headquartered would probably be most effective. Dallas (Southwest Airlines), St. Louis (Anheuser-Busch), Omaha (Howard G. Buffet Foundation), Washington, DC (Sheldon S. Cohen, etc.), Alexandria, VA (International Bottled Water Association), Boston (Kovler Fund), and DC, NYC and LA (Crowell & Moring).

This is the best news yet about the debates. The two-party duopoly uses the debates in the same way that a drunk uses a lamp post–for support rather than illumination. It is nice to see that some still believe in the value of a marketplace of ideas. Now if we could just get these sponsors to sponsor a debate with all the candidates who are on sufficient state ballots to have a theoretical chance of winning the presidency we could have a real debate.
