Montana Bills to Increase Campaign Donation Limits

The Montana legislature is considering two bills to increase contribution limits to candidates for state office. They are HB 229 and HB 263. See this story for more details. The existing limits are so low, they were enjoined in a U.S. District Court last year, although the state is appealing. Thanks to Mike Fellows for the link.

  1. Candidates do need money to get their message, so uping the limits is a good idea. The story mentions the Montana Public Interest Research Group, who opposes those bills. But MT PIRG exists because university students are forced to pay a fee to this organization, unless they opt out. MT PIRG opposed an opt in fee because they wouldn’t get the support without force. This is probably the same all over with these types of groups.
