Green Party Nominee for New York City Council Qualifies for $50,000 in Public Funding

Lynne Serpe, Green Party nominee for New York city council, 22nd district, in the November 5, 2013 election, has qualified for $50,000 in public funding for her campaign. See this story from her web page.

Other candidates in the same race are Democrat Costa Constantinides, Republican Daniel Peterson, and independent candidate Danielle DeStefano. The district is in western Queens, and is centered on Astoria.

Serpe’s campaign is so active, someone went to the trouble of investigating her, and found out that she owns a small house in New Orleans and that she had registered in New Orleans some time ago to get a tax break, on the grounds that the New Orleans house is her primary residence. She no longer lives there and she has now changed her tax status in New Orleans. Thanks to Michael for this news.

  1. There was only one contested minor party primary in the September 10 New York City vote: for the 34th City Council District (the so-called “hipster district” made up of parts of Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn [Kings County] and Ridgewood in Queens/Queens County).

Ten votes were tallied, according to the figures posted by the NYC Board of Elections. Antonio Reynoso, who won the Democratic party against Assemblyman Vito Lopez, who was ousted as chair of the Brooklyn Democratic party (party “boss”) after sexual harassment charges came to light, got 7 votes.

The famous hipster author and “voice of a generation,” Tao Lin — author of a number of books, including the recently published and acclaimed “Taipei,” got one vote. (Somehow it was recorded as for “Tao Lyn [sic].) One vote couldn’t be determined, as it, like all the votes, were write-in votes.
