Major Push for Proportional Representation Launched in Canada — 4 Comments

  1. The Brit types have a fatal fixation with complex STV P.R. —
Result – MAJOR defeats See the B.C. disaster vote.

    Simple P.R. –
Total Votes / Total Seats = EQUAL votes needed for each seat winner – via pre-election candidate rank order lists.

Winner excess votes down – loser votes up — cross district vote transfers.

Obviously candidates of the same party will rank each other highest — then other possible coalition parties.

Result – both majority rule and minority representation.

  2. Demo Rep,

MMP is actually quite popular among PR-supporting Canadians. I would also point out that there are some non-party-list PR systems that are much simpler than STV.

Proportional Score Voting (aka Reweighted Range Voting)

If you use the latter with only zero or 1 allowed for a score, then you get Proportional Approval Voting, which is so simple you can easily count it on a Google Docs spreadsheet, like this.
