Firedoglake Carries Scott McLarty’s Essay on 2016 Presidential Election — No Comments

  1. I think a Bernie Sanders/Jill Stein Presidential and Vice Presidential run could be epic. It would have the potential to break the 5% mark, if the GP could convince enough people that Hillary isn’t what people think she is. It would also help if the GP could manage to mobilize the remnants of Occupy, some of the less brainwashed unions, and those people who don’t vote because they are disgusted with both ruling parties.
It’d be a perfect combination- Sanders would have the legislative experience, while Stein would have the protest credentials. Let’s see what happens in the next couple of years…

  2. Bernie Sanders will almost certainly choose someone with actual legislative experience as his running mate. Dennis Kucinich & Cynthia McKinney would both be solid choices.

  3. The writer says the current conflict between the two parties “shouldn’t blind us to the retreat of the Democratic Party’s mainstream from FDR-era progressivism. We have two parties of war and Wall Street.”

That implies that FDR and the New Deal were opposed to war and to wall street. Actually The Roosevelt administration pushed through the first peacetime draft in American history, military aid to China and ultimately involved America in the European war that became World War II.

The domestic program of the New Deal pushed for regulated monopolies in air travel and other industries, in the belief that the economy could not support more than one or two big businesses. The wealthy FDR may have blasted “economic royalists” but the New Deal promoted a cartelized economy that we only began to dismantle in the 1970s.
