On March 20, Theodora “Tonie” Nathan died at the age of 91. She was the 1972 Libertarian nominee for vice-president, and because the Libertarian ticket received one electoral vote that year, she was the first woman in U.S. history to receive an electoral vote. See this story.

She was a very gracious lady who helped the LP make history. She was kind enough to send me some autographed cards last year. They will be treasured and she will be missed.
Roger McBride, the Repulican elector from Virginia (carried by Richard Nixon in 1972), cast his vote for the Libertarian ticked (John Hospers for Presidient, Tonie Nathan for Vice-President). He was the LP’s nominee from President in 1976.
I met Tonie Nathan in Denver in 1972, at the founding convention of The Libertarian Party. I voted for her nomination for Vice-President, and voted for her in November.
The last time I saw her was in 1981, at the 10th anniversary convention, also in Denver. She remained active in The Libertarian Party for many years after her first campaign, and ran for office in Oregon several times.
