Los Angeles Republican Registration Declines by Almost 6,000 in Just the Last 35 Days

The California Secretary of State’s last statewide registration tally was as of April 4. However, the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters keeps a running daily tally. Therefore, it is possible to know registration changes between April 4 and May 9.

In that short interval, the Republican Party lost 5,978 registrants in Los Angeles County. By contrast, most of the state’s qualified parties gained in Los Angeles County during that period. The Democratic Party gained 858, the Peace & Freedom Party gained 243, the Libertarian Party gained 236, and Americans Elect gained one.

The Green Party lost 53, and the American Independent Party lost 67. The combination of independent voters plus voters registered in unqualified parties gained 4,024.

  1. Hmmm. Elephants leaving the CA People’s Socialist Republic and going east — or even out of the USA ???

ALL public party registration lists are PURGE lists.

Think Stalin and Hitler in the 1930s.

  2. More likely they simply changed their party registration. Not sure why anyone would assume they had been murdered.

  3. California does not agglomerate voters with no party affiliation, with those registered with a non-qualified party (please note spelling). Just because the Los Angeles County Registrar uses eccentric terms, and classifies voters differently than the other counties, doesn’t mean that you should use yet other terms.

California counties are quite inconsistent in the maintenance of the their registration lists. For example, between Feb 2013 and April 2014 (that is, following the 2012 presidential election and just before the 2014 primary), San Francisco C&C registrations dropped 13.2%; while those in San Mateo County its immediate neighbor declined by 1.0%.

Many counties will only remove the sure things, persons who have died, or moved to a county that confirmed their former address. If someone just moves, or can’t remember whether they were registered, or can’t remember their previous address(es), or move to a county that doesn’t bother to ask, then they may continue to be on the voting rolls, multiple times.

In 2012, were 82.4% of eligible San Franciscans registered, but only 72.6% bothered to vote; or were only 69.8% registered and residing at the address of their registration, and 83.6% voted? San Francisco registration statistics say the latter.

But most likely, even a smaller share were actually registered, but most all voted. If you aren’t going to vote in the presidential election, there is really little point in being registered at all.

Counties that do haphazard or minimal maintenance will see more of a decline in Republicans. Counties that are more aggressive, will see larger declines in NPP, and parties such as Green and P&F.

  4. Jim Riley

Richard Winger is making to much on this issue of non-qualified parties in LOs Angeles. It is really down to
how the California County Election Officials treat the
National registration form circa 2007. L.A. County
goes to the issue of affiliation viz. the 56 other counties (except Alameda County) look at it as party
    non-parties.
