This Politico article by Kyle Kondik analyzes how incumbent members of Congress do in primaries. In the period since the end of World War II, the highest percentage of U.S. House members who were defeated in major party primaries was in 1992, when 5% of them lost. It doesn’t really discuss why incumbents almost always win.
The subhead is revealing “Do primaries still matter anymore?” They typically don’t for incumbents.
But when there is an open seat, they DO matter. And that is why it is so important to permit any voter to vote in every election.
