On September 24, Gallup released its poll on whether the U.S. would be better off with a major new political party. Gallup does this poll approximately once per year. The new poll shows 58% in favor. The all-time high was 60%, from last year’s poll.

Gallup Releases its Annual Poll on Whether a New Major Party Would be Desirable — 16 Comments

  1. Of that 58%, how many consider themselves Liberal and how many consider themselves Conservative? This high percentage might sound encouraging to the 3rd party advocates who want a new party to become a major party, but such a such party’s would-be membership must be primarily composed of the same political philosophy, or else it is a moot point. Even it evenly divided among Liberals and Conservatives, that would mean 24% which is not enough to be successful at election time as a new major party. Such a new party must be guaranteed of getting at least 40% of the vote in a 3 way election, otherwise it is an exercise in futility.

  2. The fact that the Republicans and Democrats are so similar on issues means that they are pretty much the same party, the ESTABLISHMENT party, which excludes all other minor party candidates from media coverage and debates. What America really needs is fair and equal coverage of all existing SECOND parties. Interesting data on the chart showing that almost half of both Republicans and Democrats want more candidate choices. Unfortunately this is often people taking the high road – they “talk the talk” to look good but won’t actually walk the walk when it comes time to acting.

  3. It is extremely difficult to get on the ballot in Tennessee with a party label other than Democrat or Republican. Libertarians, as well as candidates from other minor parties, usually run as independents in Tennessee, because it is much easier to get on the ballot in Tennessee as an independent than it is to get on the ballot with a minor party label.

I do not know if any of the independent candidates who are running for US Senate in Tennessee this year are Libertarians. I was just pointing out that it is very difficult to get on the ballot in Tennessee with a minor party label.

There has been a lawsuit and a lobbying effort going on in Tennessee for the last several years to try to ease ballot access for minor parties, but they have yet to receive the relief they are seeking.

  4. P.R. will get more parties to actually represent a very high percentage of all Electors-Voters.

i.e. to have a REAL Democracy and END the EVIL rule of the gerrymander OLIGARCHS since 1776 in the USA.

  5. A followup question would have been informative. “If you answered ‘yes’ to the previous question, would you be willing to donate $200 to that major new political party?”

I’m guessing 40% would say yes to the second question, and no more than about 1/4 of them would actually pony up the cash if given the opportunity.

Without radical overhaul of our corrupt system of financing campaigns, overturning of the recent anti-democratic USSC rulings, and total elimination of PACS and Super PACS, a “major” third party will become a reality only when gravitational power is reversed and we all float to the polling place.

  6. Couldn’t agree with Jeff Becker more. A lot of people “talk the talk” but when the opportunity comes, they vote either Democratic or Republican. Until they start truly demanding a 3rd (or 2nd party as Jeff points out)then we won’t see much change. I won’t got into the reasons on this reply, but in 25 to 50 years, the GOP will not be a national major party.

  7. To further add to my last reply, when the GOP eventually becomes only a regional party, the nation will become a 1 party state with the Democratic Party winning every presidential election as long as their is a United States. As long as the Democratic Party continues to hold presidential preference primaries, they will get away with it.

  8. Lots of folks thought that the GOP was dead after 1936 Roosevelt, after 1964 Johnson, after 1992 Clinton.

There is a reaction to the COMMUNIST Donkeys.

  9. From Lincoln to Taft there were what? two Democratic nominees who won (both named Cleveland – what are the chances of THAT?).

A half century Republican dominance of the presidential elections, and yet eventually the Democratic party eventually had and exploited their opportunity to win the office several times in the 110 years after that.

Talk of a “one party” US is based on fear, not fact.

  10. Demo Rep. Again, won’t go into the reason why, but unless the GOP abandons it current position held on certain “hot topic” issues, it will eventually become a regional party. Not saying it won’t run a presidential ticket just to give people an opportunity to vote against the Democratic Party. As long as there is a nationally ballot-positioned GOP it will enter a presidential candidate.

It is true, such was said about the party after the “36, “64, and “92 elections. But the country has changed since “92. Not saying that I agree with the changes the party will have to make. I’m just saying that the country has changed and the GOP will have to decide what road it will take. The results of the presidential elections of 2016 and 2020 will tell us what decision the party may make.

  11. True Foe: Never said it was a fact that we would become a 1 party state. This is only my opinion and it is not based on fear even if in previous replies I may have used he word “fear.” It is based on what I see as a changed country in my some 70 years that I have lived. I do not “fear” if such does come to pass. I may be banned from future posts for saying this, but as long as God is in control, I do not fear a 1 party dominated United States of America – should that ever happen.

  12. If your God/controller allows the US to become a one party country, there is nothing to fear – that would, after all, be your God’s will.

  13. TruFoe: I know Richard may scold us both and ban us both for getting into religion in our replies (although I do not believe Christianity is a religion – it is a spiritual relationship between a man (or woman) and Jesus – still God sometimes allows man to make mistakes which causes others in humanity to suffer, and then sometimes God’s Will is that some things are to happen to advance His Agenda. So to address your point, yes, if God Wills that America is to become a 1 party rule in the United States, then I have to accept what happens, but I may see suffering as a result.

We do not question why God allow things to happen, but because it may not be Him that is allowing it, rather the errors of mankind that is the culprit. But sometimes, God does allow things to happen to punish his creation, to get their attention, etc.

If and when the United States becomes a 1 party state, those left behind should have the discernment to know if it is the result of man’s decision or perhaps God’s Will.
