“State” Senator? Not Territorial Senator?
I agree with you, Casual Bystander. How can someone be called a “state” senator, when the Virgin Islands is NOT a state. Senator, yes, but not State Senator.
I checked the Virgin Islands legislative website. Like Nebraska, the Virgin Islands legislature is unicameral – that is, only one house. As in Nebraska, the legislators are thus classed as “Senators.” Since 1966, they have had 15 senators of which 1 is elected at-large and the other 14 from 2 districts. Strictly speaking, Alabama Independent, I supposed they should be referred to as “Territorial Senators” but we all know what Richard meant despite the slip of the tongue.
Gene: I wasn’t and didn’t meant to criticize Richard for calling this person a State Senator. We all have “slip of the tongue” moments – at least I know I do.
Formally the members of the Virgin Island Legislature should be called “Territorial Senators.” I agree with you here. But informally, in these blogs and posts, and in our replies, I feel the term “Senator” is all that is necessary.
