  1. I don’t know why there is such an issue here. Technically, there is no such thing as a candidate for President and Vice-President. There are only candidates for Electors for President and Vice-President.

Let the Kentucky Legislature be as stubborn as they care to be, for I feel sure when “push comes to shove,” the U.S. Supreme Court will rule that Electors can be listed on the General Election Ballot pledged to Rand Paul, while the person of Rand Paul can be a candidate for re-election to the U.S. Senator from Kentucky.

I believe Senator Paul knows this, and I trust his closest aides will remind him of such.

  2. Yes, but the imminent problem is the presidential primary. Electors have nothing to do with presidential primaries.

  3. He could pull a George Wallace of 2016 and run MRS. Rand Paul in the Kentucky presidential primary. The delegates she wins in Kentucky would then vote for MR. Rand Paul at the Convention. I think the voters of Kentucky are smart enough to know how this could work.

George Wallace pulled off one of the greatest political tactics ever in 1966 when he was forbidden to run for a 2nd term, and ran his wife. She was listed on the Primary ballot as Mrs. George C. Wallace. She won by a landslide, defeating several other candidates without the necessity of a Primary Runoff. Everybody knew George Wallace would be the actual governor, and had she not died during her term, he would have had a 2nd full term by proxy.

Despite the “segregationist” baggage Wallace had to carry in 1966, he was one of the most progressive governors the state has ever had or may ever have. Even most of the Black voters voted for him and his wife.

  4. When people vote in Presidential primaries, they are really voting for which delegates go to the party’s national convention to vote for who the candidate for President will be, so I think a good argument can be made that this law should not apply to candidates for President in the primaries.

  5. Regardless of how a state regards or identifies a candidate for President in its Presidential Preference Primaries, at some point delegates based on votes received in the primary have to be given out. If Mrs. Rand Paul stood in for Mr. Rand Paul, and the voters gave her xxx thousands of votes worth xxx number of delegates, she could release those delegates to vote for Mr. Rand Paul at the Convention.

There are alot of ways to get around the stubborn Kentucky legislators. And Senator Rand Paul is smart enough to determine the best way to do it. I would hate for him to give up his safe Senatorial seat just to run in the primaries, because while I think he would electrify the GOP, I don’t know if the establishment would let him have the Presidential nomination.

They still want someone like John McCain or Mitt Romney or Jeb Bush, which of course would mean Hillary Clinton will be the next president in 2016.

  6. It looks like the Kentucky primary is scheduled for May at this point. If Rand just skipped putting his name on the ballot and endorsed an “Uncommitted” slate of delegates, it seems like this wouldn’t be a big issue.

The nominee will likely be decided by May, anyway.

For the general election, a similar work-around could probably be fashioned if needed. Kentucky is not exactly a purple state in presidential contests.

  7. I think in most states candidates run as candidates. Delegates then pick the nominee and the state’s certify the electors. So we do vote for electors in the general election, but in the primary we are voting for the candidate.

  8. David: Refer to my previous replies as to the options which Senator Rand Paul can utilize to run both for re-election to the U.S. Senate, as well as to promote a candidacy for the GOP nomination for President in 2016.

Has anyone given thought that Ran Paul has committed to one of two options already:

    1) He is not going to run for President in 2016.

    2) He is going to give up his senatorial seat and make an all out – do or die – bid for the Presidential election.

I could be proven wrong, but he is the Goldwater of 2016, and while he may get the GOP nomination, he won’t be elected. The American people are simply not ready for his brand of “libertarianism.”

If he loses the presidential election of 2016, he may still have enough clout and supporters to remain aloft until 2024, when Hillary’s two terms will be up and the American people may then be ready for Rand Paul and libertarianism.

    Time shall tell.
