Kansas Bill to Restore Straight-Ticket Device May be in Trouble

Kansas HB 2108 would bring back the straight-ticket device, which was abolished in 1923. Even though the Secretary of State, Kris Kobach, supports the bill, it seems likely that it won’t pass. Other Kobach election law bills are moving ahead, such as his bill to restrict candidates from withdrawing. But the Kansas legislature’s web page shows that HB 2108 has been stricken from the House calendar.

  1. Party bosses don’t want to give any 3rd party or Independent Candidate a fighting chance in an election. This is why they want the party lever restored in Kansas.
But until we can get voters “educated” and teach them how to cast an intelligent ballot, it doesn’t matter if you have a party lever or not.
While it is encouraging that in many states that voters are enrolling as “unaffiliated” we have to make them understand that first we much operate as a political party, then Independents can start having some influence on the out come of the election.
This is going to be hard to do. It is hard to get a Baptist to convert to a Methodist, and it is hard to get a Presbyterian to convert to a Catholic. It is likewise hard to get a Democrat or Republican to convert to a Independent.
But we can’t give up. Someday the major party politicians will become so crooked, the people will wake up and take matter into their own hands. That day can’t come soon enough!
