Jimmy Carter Says U.S. “Does Not at the Moment Have a Functioning Democracy”

On July 16, former President Jimmy Carter said in a speech, “America does not at the moment have a functioning democracy”. See this story. In 2003, Carter said that he deplores Georgia’s ballot access laws, but that he saw no hope that they would change unless a court strikes them down.

  1. Of course, that didn’t keep his 1976 campaign from trying to keep Eugene McCarthy off the ballot in so many states.

  3. The former President’s comments give aid and cover to all those who continue to speak through the mainstream rhetoric about America’s democratic status. I hope he puts out a book on the crisis of democracy.

  4. As far as I know, in 1976 New York is the only state where either the Carter campaign or the Democratic Party tried to keep Eugene McCarthy off the ballot.
